I keep getting a lot of request regarding what type of gear I used for my CCIE voice lab, and finally decided to put this up in my blog:
Note: with below list of gears I was able to do 95% of lab tasks. For Cat6k , no need to buy it. There are hardly 10-12 commands which you’ll need to play with, that can be done using a online rented racks.
Also, there is no need to buy expensive VG248. You can practice it on Cisco partner website or online rack. I believe if you are very bad student you should be fine in 2 hour with VG248 and CAT6k.

HQ:
——————————
1 x 3560- 8 port switch
1 x 2801 with 1 x vwic2-1T1 or E1T1 + 1 x WIC-2T + 1 x PVDM2-16 + 1 x VWIC-2FXS
2 x serial cables
1 x RJ45 E1 cross over cable (remember this is not ethernet cross over, pins are TX-1,2 & RX- 4,5)
3 or 2 x IP phone 7960G

SiteB:
——————————

1 x 2811 with 1 x VWIC2-1T1+ 1 x WIC-1T + 1x PVDM2-16 + 1 x NM-16ESW
1 x serial cross cable
2 x 7960G IP phone
1 x ATA186
2 x IP phones 7960G (buy external 48 volt power pack coz NM16esw doesn’t have inline power and buying 2 48 volt external power pack costs fraction than nm-16esw-PWR)

SiteC:
——————————

1 x 3560-8 port switch
1 x 2801 router with 1 x AIM-CUE + 1 x PVDM2-16 + 1 x VWIC2-1E1 + 1 xVWIC-1T
1 x Serial crossover cable
1 x RJ45 E1T1 crossover
2 x 7960G IP phone

PSTN Switch + Frame-Relay router:
————————————————–

The trick here is to save number of hardware required for the lab. I was able to do both function using just 1 router without secrifying anything.

1 x 2811 with 1 x VWIC-2T1 or VWIC2-2T1 + 1 x vwic-1E1 or VWIC2-1E1 + 2 x VWIC2T + 1 x PVDM2-16
1 x 7960G IP phone (PSTN phone, buy external power pack as this phone will be hooking on fas0/0 which has no inline power)
1 x rj45 cable (connecting phone to the pstn router)
I used to only allocate 1-3 timeslots for E1T1 for each location. In that way you have plenty of PVDM. workbooks uses 1-6 or 1-15 timelsots at each location.

Note: When ordering serial cable pay special attention to DTE/DCE.

Call managers, Unity, IPCC hardware/ VMWARE server:
——————————————————————————–

Any server with 4 gig RAM + at least DUAL XEON 3 Gig will do the job. I had this config of hardware and was able to run CCM publisher, subscriber and unity at the same time without performance degradation.

HTH
